WHO WE ARE
Mayarim Foundation is a Darfurian princesses-led foundation dedicated to preserving Darfurian cultural heritage, advancing education, supporting historical, cultural, and geographic research, fostering innovation among Darfurian youth, and promoting entrepreneurship and community development.
Through cultural preservation, historical documentation, learning opportunities, and community initiatives, we work to empower Darfurian women, strengthen Darfurian identity, and inspire future generations to embrace their heritage, leadership, and potential.
Our mission is to connect the wisdom and legacy of the Mayarim of the past with the opportunities of the future, creating lasting impact for communities through knowledge, culture, leadership, innovation, and sustainable development in Darfur.
Our Story: Why Mayarim Foundation Was Created
Mayarim Foundation was born from a shared concern, a shared vision, and a shared commitment among a group of Darfurian women who believed that important parts of their history, culture, identity, and heritage were gradually being forgotten.
For many years, we observed that discussions about Darfurian culture often focused on only a few visible aspects, such as language development, traditional dances, and cultural celebrations, while many other important elements of Darfurian heritage received little attention. The history of women, traditional leadership systems, cultural values, historical achievements, geographical knowledge, and community traditions were often overlooked or insufficiently documented.
At the same time, we noticed that the historical role of women within Darfurian society was becoming less visible. The stories of women leaders, educators, advisors, traders, peacebuilders, and community builders were rarely discussed. Many younger generations were growing up without knowing the important contributions that women had made throughout Darfur's history.
These concerns led to many conversations among women activists, educators, and community members who shared a desire to preserve heritage, strengthen cultural awareness, and reconnect younger generations with their history and identity.
The idea for Mayarim Foundation emerged during a simple social gathering. In June 2024, four of us visited a friend whose husband had recently returned from abroad. As we sat together, shared a meal, and talked about our community, the conversation returned to the challenges we had been discussing for years.
We asked ourselves a simple question:
"Why not create a women-led foundation that preserves our heritage, documents our history, supports research, promotes education, strengthens women, and helps safeguard our identity for future generations?"
That conversation became the beginning of Mayarim Foundation.
Five women initially came together around this idea. We agreed to meet regularly, share knowledge, create awareness materials, record educational videos, and discuss how we could contribute to our community. As with many new initiatives, some people joined while others moved on. One member later left the group, and another joined for a short period before also leaving.
Despite these changes, the vision remained alive.
A committed core group of women continued working together, and over time more women began to understand the concerns we were raising and the future we hoped to build. Slowly, support grew, and the foundation continued to develop.

To preserve and promote Darfurian heritage, support historical and geographical research, empower women and future generations through education and innovation, and contribute to stronger, more informed, and culturally proud communities.

Who Are the Mayarim?
The Mayarim were the respected sisters and daughters of the Sultans of Darfur. Throughout the history of the Darfur Sultanate, they held honored positions within society and were recognized for their wisdom, leadership, influence, and service to their communities.
What Does the Word Mean?
The word "Mayarim" originates from the historical official language of the Darfur Sultanate and is associated with the meaning of "Princesses." Over time, the term became widely known and used across different communities and languages within the Sultanate.
What Role Did the Mayarim Play in Darfurian Society?
The Mayarim were more than members of a royal family. They played important roles in preserving culture and traditions, advising leaders, promoting peace and unity, supporting communities, and contributing to the social and economic life of the Sultanate.
Their position reflected the value that Darfurian society placed on the leadership, knowledge, and contributions of women.
Why Does Their Legacy Inspire the Foundation Today?
Mayarim Foundation draws inspiration from this legacy of leadership, responsibility, service, and cultural preservation.
We believe that the values represented by the Mayarim remain relevant today. By preserving heritage, supporting research, empowering women, promoting education and innovation, and strengthening communities, we seek to connect the wisdom of the past with the opportunities of the future.
The name "Mayarim" reminds us that women have always played a vital role in shaping society, and that their leadership, knowledge, and contributions continue to be essential for building a stronger future.
